This is a fantastic hike. Janet, Namita and I woke up early Saturday morning drove from the bay area to Sequoia National park. We were lucky to get a camping permit, and started hiking around 14:30. After taking it slowly on the way up as one of us was a little sick, we made it to Mehrten meadow campground at 18:00. This was about 800m climb and 6.4 km from the trail head and could have been done a lot faster. The elevation here is ~2700m. Still only patches of snow.
The next day we woke up at 7:00AM and left camp around 9:40. We hiked all the way to the summit of Alta Peak at 3400m. I could feel the lack of oxygen a little, but it's not a very steep trail. The last section had a snow field but I didn't need to use my snow shoes. The view from the top was great, if a little hazy. It was a great hike with a great company.
