A nice short hike, the 500 stairs is a good way to get leg muscles screaming. My favourite way of doing this hike is by starting at the edge of the ocean nearby and trek to the top of Burnaby mountain. Walking up from Barnet Marine Park and crossing the street takes you up into a parking lot. From there the Mountain Air Trail begins. We encountered a single individual on a mountain bike and this point. Taking a left leads to the formidable 500 stairs (Velodrome Trail). As the stairs switchback up the mountain there are pleasant views of the bay below. Keep left at the next two forks and the trail ends up at the restaurant on top of Burnaby Mountain. Our trip had good weather-- unfortunately the wind died down when we began the stairs. On this particular day we actually flipped the order and started from the top, wandered around the beach, and then adventured up to catch a bus.
