Royal Basin (from Upper Dungeness Trail)

Jul 31, 2021
This is an overnight trip. We camped at Lower Royal Meadow Sat night, and Upper Royal Basin Sunday night. Needs wilderness permit from Olympic National Park.
Camping at Upper Royal Basin requires talking to the ranger. From recreation.gov, you are not able to reserve a site there.
Bear can is required.
Upper Royal Basin doesn't have many good camping spots that offer views. It took us awhile, and pitched our tent much higher along the climbing route.
I was able to climb to the ridge (with ice axe), to see Deception Basin over the ridge. I saw foot prints to the east of my route. But the surface is too loose (shards of rocks). I prefer snow, even though steeper. Well worth my effort.
