This was a second attempt on Sampson - the first was via the original North Route. We spent 2 days sawing into deep brutal Alder and only managed to get to the base of the mountain, running out of time. This second approach comes in via a different logging road and allows you to get about 1100m up with very little bushwacking involved. We cut and flagged a new route from the road to the upper tree line. It travels through an old burn and the trail goes relentlessly up 2km and about 1000m before getting to a rocky rambling ridge line. From here on, it's traveling on talus and boulders to gain Zorah peak and then descend onto the pocket glacier. It's fairly benign if you stick to the right side of it but does involve some minor crevasses this time of year. The most grueling part comes from ascending the remnant lose moraine and glacier debris into the a scree looking gully. Then it's still another 600m up to the summit. At 2811m Mt Sampson is very high and makes it's own weather. Be prepared for freezing cold temperatures even in the middle of summer. The views from the summit are outstanding and you'll see green lush valleys below. This is a HARD hike to do as a day trip and the 2200m of descent is as knee wrecker for sure. Glad we managed to get up this peak - we also rebuild the summit register with a new Tupperware box, some new paper, and a geode :)
