Some more solo exploration of the trails on Lower Fromme in North Vancouver.
Parked on Braemer and hiked the lowest portion of Dreamweaver, past the old cabin site, for the first time. Always a pleasant trail with some pretty spots with big trees and creeks.
There used to be a DNV signpost for Per Gynt right before the Kwai Bridge but this has been removed and the trail seems, like many others, to have been decommissioned by the District. The way up is still flagged however, and the trail is still very much hikeable. I emerged on the Old GMH.
I took a left on old GMH which marked new territory for me. This continues on for a few KM and I worried it would be dull on an old road, but actually there is enough to see along the way. Snow starts in earnest around 760m elevation along this road and did slow me down a bit, especially at the creek crossings. There was a set of tracks for me to follow which saved energy. The road passes a viewpoint as well as a lot of interesting old junk including a crashed car down in the trees and ancient looking beer cans from well before my time. Garbage to be sure, but historical garbage ;-)
My plan was to go find the start of the IROC trail and the waterfall marked on the map there. Snow, prickly bushes, mud and the waning hour prevented this. I did hear the Falls and glimpse a piece of orange flagging up a slope.
Does anyone know why this trail is called IROC? There is little info about it online.
I retraced my steps, however the water was low enough in that part of Mosquito Creek that tracks crossed and continued on to the other side of Old GMH.
Took St George for a speedy descent back to Dreamweaver and then back to the car. Those woods are always nice in the late afternoon when it's quiet and the sun filters through. Not a bad day out close to home.
